world-mapValley K Lily Ranch no longer accepts orders from outside of North America as of July 1, 2014.

Shipping charges alone have become prohibitive for most people and options in delivery are limited with very little difference in price between postal service and courier companies who deliver from Canada. I find this has limited the number of International orders we recieve enough that it is no longer worth the intense effort and time involved to configure the shipping options and charges for the online catalog, which must be done annually.  You can imagine how many countries there are and within each one usually many states or provinces - shipping options must be configured accurately for each state/province within each country of course.  In spring 2014 I implemented a brand new shopping cart system which required all new data and configuration.  Shortly before the catalog was ready to go online I began to wonder if it was worth the effort required and decided it was not.  Please read on to learn more about the reasons for my decision.

In recent years it has been impossible to accurately predict shipping costs or even to estimate them and 9 out of 10 times, I have ended up subsidizing or paying the difference myself and frankly, I do not wish to do so any longer.  Due to the nature of the product we ship, it is impossible to use weights and ready-made shipping plugins produced by various shipping/delivery companies since we cannot predict the weight until bulbs are actually dug, washed and packed.  I have always used a percentage of the total order as a baseline for shipping costs, which is what most mail order plant businesses use but this percentage does not work out correctly with the high costs of shipping out of country.

Another reason is the lack of control over the package once it leaves my hands - the increased costs that can result from the carelessness of others which I also have no control over.  I find customer service and due diligence in so many companies these days is sadly lacking, and courier delivery is no exception.  Every package shipped out of Canada with plant material requires certain papers and certifications depending on the laws of the country it is shipped to.  These papers MUST be present in most cases and typically they must be originals.  On occasion I have been contacted because some or all paperwork is missing from the package!  We include more than 1 copy, usually 3 to be exact and up to 5 copies if requested by the customer but there is NO REASON for the delivery company to remove these papers - they are specifically for the Customs department of the receiving country and Customs will not allow entry of the package if they are missing.  So what happens if they are?  I get a call requesting all the paperwork again and since plant material is perishable they also must be delivered to the department requesting them ASAP.  That leaves me obligated to pay for the documents themselves again - for instance the phyto - and then pay the highest prices imaginable in order to get the documents there as quickly as possible.  So I'm looking at an additional $80-100 on average to deliver a piece of paper by Express methods, to another country, and that is more cost than I am willing to bear any longer.

Plant material (lily bulbs included) is subject to extra scrutiny, handling and regulations in most countries, which only complicates shipping them. Typically it takes me 45 minutes to an hour just to prepare the paperwork involved in shipping internationally, not to mention travelling 2 hours one way to have them inspected for the phytosanitary certificate required.  Starting to understand why I have made this decision?  I hope by reading this you gain some understanding for other companies who also refuse to ship out of their native country.  It is no easy thing, believe me!

I have in the past shipped to the U.S., U.K., Mexico, Netherlands, Romania, Denmark, Norway, Germany, France plus a few countries within the EU but I am sorry to say I no longer will do so unless by special request.  I am sincerely sorry for any disappointment this may cause to our loyal overseas customers.
